About Maria

Maria is one of the founding partners of the firm and leads the firm's Financial Services Practice Group and advises on all aspects of licensing of companies operating in the investment services and regulated financial services sectors.

Maria has been acknowledged for her expertise and experience in legal matters related to investment services, banking and financial institutions. hrough the firm's specialised practise group Maria and other team members have advised large international corporates on relocating their operations to Malta or opening a branch / agency herein.

In her role as Head of the IP & ICT PG, Maria spearheaded the one-year long project assigned by Malta Enterprise for the digitisation of the pharmaceutical patent register. 

Maria's latest project is that of acting as mentor to a number of Maltese startups in the field of ICT, biotechnology, engineering and pharma. Chetcuti Cauchi has been selected by the Malta Council for Science and Technology as advisors on the R&I Voucher scheme on various areas including IP Check, Business Planning and Initial Patent Application.

Maria advises on all aspects of licensing of companies operating in the investment services and regulated financial services sectors as well as the gaming and ICT fields. Maria is also an intellectual property specialist and heads the intellectual property department of the firm. Maria is a registered European trademark attorney, an approved EPO European Patent Attorney and a member of the Institute of Financial Services Practitioners, the Society for Trusts & Estates Practitioners and the Malta Chamber of Advocates.

Education / Training

2001 LL.D. European Corporate Law (University of Malta) and 2002 LL.M. International Economic Law (University of Warwick). In 2000 joined Deloitte Malta, then moved on to Camilleri Preziosi Advocates till 2003. Co-founding partner of Chetcuti Cauchi since 2003. 


Maria has represented major associations, large corporates and owner managed business in all their IP, ICT and regulation needs. Names include: IKEA, Ecco, Eucor, Arena Pharma, Big Start Limited, Grünecker, KFIG Ltd and the Malta College of Arts Science and Technology.
